Local leaders join Philly community to celebrate investiture of Dr. Alycia A. Marshall, seventh president of Community College of Philadelphia
The presidential investiture of Dr. Alycia A. Marshall was held today, Oct. 9, at the Highmark Mann Center for the Performing Arts
PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, Philadelphia City Councilmember and Majority Whip Isaiah Thomas, Pennsylvania State Sen. Vincent Hughes, and other local leaders joined the Philadelphia community today at the Highmark Mann Center for the Performing Arts in West Philadelphia in celebration of the presidential investiture of Dr. Alycia A. Marshall. The investiture ceremony formally installed Dr. Marshall as the seventh president of Community College of Philadelphia.
Dr. Marshall had served as the College’s interim president prior to being named president after a national search. In her previous role as provost and vice president for Academic and Student Success at CCP, she oversaw Academic Affairs, Workforce Development and Student Support and Engagement.
“I am deeply humbled to be entrusted with the presidency of Community College of Philadelphia,” Dr. Marshall said. “CCP is an educational hub for the city, it is a place where generations of Philadelphians have found opportunity, built better lives, and helped strengthen the communities they call home. To lead an institution with that kind of legacy and reach is an extraordinary honor. I am grateful for the opportunity to carry that legacy forward and help shape what comes next for Philadelphia and Pennsylvania.”
Dr. Marshall began her career in higher education at Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland where she was a tenured Full Professor of Mathematics, Department Chair of Mathematics and Associate Vice President for Learning and Academic Affairs. She holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from The University of Maryland, College Park, a Master of Arts degree in Teaching from Bowie State University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from The University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
“Dr. Marshall is a highly regarded and admired leader and is considered a treasure,” said Dr. Freeman A. Hrabowski III, president emeritus of The University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
“Dr. Alycia Marshall understands what a college education can mean for a family, and she is putting that belief to work at CCP,” said Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. “Our strong partnership supported more than 2,000 Catto Scholars pursuing college degrees last school year and has connected nearly 500 Philadelphians to career training through City College for Municipal Employment. She shares my commitment to helping residents move up the economic ladder. I look forward to expanding these opportunities together so more Philadelphians can earn a good living and build a better future for their families.”
“I am so thrilled to see Dr. Alycia Marshall officially inaugurated as the seventh President of Community College of Philadelphia,” said Senator Vincent Hughes. “Dr. Marshall has already been doing a great job in advancing CCP and finding pathways for both students and faculty to get the most out of their time with the college. She leads with thoughtfulness and has shown beyond measure that she is the woman for the job. I’d like to congratulate Dr. Marshall on this exciting milestone and the bright future both her and the CCP community have before them.”
"Community College of Philadelphia is one of the most important engines of economic opportunity in our region. It's where Philadelphians of every age and background can find a pathway to a career, and where our employers find the skilled, homegrown talent they need to grow," said Chellie Cameron, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia. "Dr. Marshall brings the vision and understanding of community to lead that work, and the business community is proud to stand with her as a partner in building a stronger, more inclusive Greater Philadelphia."
"During my time working with Dr. Marshall, I saw a leader who was willing to listen to students, engage with faculty and staff, and think beyond what was immediately in front of us,” said CCP alum and current University of Pennsylvania student Daniel Emdin. “She believed in me before I knew what I could become, and I believe that under Dr. Marshall’s leadership, we can continue building a college and a city that believes in every student before they have the opportunity to prove themselves.”
During the investiture, Dr. Hrabowski delivered the keynote address. Remarks were also delivered by Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, Philadelphia Councilmember and Majority Whip Isaiah Thomas, Pennsylvania State Sen. Vincent Hughes, Pennsylvania State Rep. Morgan Cephas, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia Chellie Cameron, CCP Board of Trustees member Rosalyn McPherson, CCP alum Daniel Emdin, CCP Board of Trustees Vice Chair Sheila Ireland, family member of Dr. Marshall and vice president of Field Engagement and Innovation at Purpose Built Communities Dr. Ben Lewis, and CCP President Dr. Alycia A. Marshall. A congratulatory message was also delivered on behalf of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
